Jenni Sainio (b. 1981) is a Finnish bilingual (FI+SWE) independent performing arts professional.

At the moment (2024) she works as a voice actor, audiobook narrator (since 2003) and with songwriting.

She's been working as a physical theatre director, workshop leader and audience inspirement specialist. Her work covers strategic organisatory expertise & consulting in performing arts in addition to considerable hands-on experience in the field.

Sainio has an MA in Contemporary Contexts of Arts. As well as 40 cr additional studies of physical theatre at Theatre Academy, Helsinki years 2005-2006.

At the moment (2024), she works and lives in Helsinki as a freelancer.

She has directed movement-based non-verbal theatre performances and been teaching drama and movement workshops. Jenni also has worked as coordinator and producer for bigger contemporary dance productions, a lot with audience development and with community theatre as well.

In her artistic work in physical theatre she is fascinated by the anatomy of intense emotional loading built up on strong, physical, inexorable movement language and by rich symbolism of hand gestures, objects and materials. Thematically her stage directions often deal with the tension between living and inanimate objects, haunting emotions and the concept of catharsis.

Jenni has a firm experience of audience relationship, audience development and questions of receiving contemporary dance based on the time she worked two years full-time as Head of contemporary dance audience development in Zodiak – Centre for New Dance in Helsinki (2009–2011). Since 2006 she has been working secondary as journalist and critic writing interviews, articles, profiles, program texts and festival collages about contemporary dance and physical theatre.

She directed and produced a four-part project, MOVING ART 2013–2014, combining the corporeality of visual arts and the visuality of movement in Lenkkiteatteri, Helsinki. It was a co-operation with visual artist Elina Aho/ Taidelaboratorio Viiskulma. As part of this project she practically worked on and analytically shaped her artistic work with movement and movement observation in the frame of physical theatre and movement-based installation, combined with experimental visual art, sound and light.

In 2014 she worked as a producer (fixed-term) for Dance House Helsinki. In the work she gained particular honour in her visionary audience development work.

2015-2016 she worked as Head of Audience Development at Svenska Teatern, The Swedish National Theatre in Helsinki. 2016-2018 she worked with Audience Engagement at Dance House Helsinki creating and shaping the audience engagement strategy for the upcoming organisation & designing and carrying out numerous hands-on projects with different cooperation partners and diverse groups of people.

Jenni Sainio (s.1981) on kaksikielinen (FI+SWE) esittävän taiteen freelancer.

Tällä hetkellä (2024) hän työskentelee ääninäyttelijänä ja äänikirjanlukijana (vuodesta 2003 lähtien) sekä tekee omaa musiikkia.

Hän on työskennellyt fyysisen teatterin ohjaajana, workshop -ohjaajana sekä yleisösuhteen ja -innostamisen asiantuntijatehtävissä. Esittävän taiteen strategisen asiantuntijuuden ja organisaatioiden konsultointityön lisäksi hänellä on laaja kokemus käytännön työstä yleisöjen parissa toimimisesta.

Sainiolla on taidealan YAMK-tutkinto (Taiteen uudet kontekstit). Lisäksi hän opiskeli 40 op fyysistä teatteria Teatterikorkeakoulussa vuosina 2005-2006.

Tällä hetkellä (2024) hän asuu ja työskentelee freelancerina Helsingissä.

Esitysohjauksissaan häntä kiehtoo vahvan tunnelatauksen anatomia voimakkaan fyysisen, vääjäämättömän liikkeellisen intensiteetin varaan rakennettuna sekä käsieleiden, esineiden ja materiaalien rikas symboliikka. Temaattisesti hänen ohjauksensa käsittelevät usein elollisen ja elottoman suhdetta, voimakkaita emootioita sekä puhdistautumisen käsitettä.

Sainio on esitysohjaustöidensä lisäksi ohjannut draama- sekä liikkeellisiä työpajoja lapsiharrastajille, eri taidealojen ammattilaisille, vammaisille ja yläasteikäisille nuorille sekä kirjoittanut nykytanssista ja fyysisestä teatterista vapaana toimittajana ja kriitikkona useisiin tanssialan julkaisuihin. Lisäksi hän on toiminut niin nykytanssi- kuin soveltavan teatterinkin kentällä useaan otteeseen projekti- ja hankekoordinaattorina. Sainiolla on vankka kokemus nykytanssin yleisösuhteen, vastaanoton ja sen soveltavien muotojen kysymyksistä työskenneltyään kaksi vuotta Zodiak - Uuden tanssin keskuksen yleisötyövastaavana (2009-2011).

Vuonna 2014 hän työskenteli Tanssin talossa määräaikaisena tuottajana, ja sai siellä työstään kiitosta etenkin näkemyksellisestä yleisötyön kehittämisestä.

2015-2016 hän toimi yleisötyöntekijänä Svenska Teaternissa Helsingissä. 2016-2018 hän työskenteli yleisötyösuunnittelijana Tanssin talossa Helsingissä luoden mm. tulevan organisaation yleisötyöstrategiaa sekä toteuttaen ja ohjaten lukuisia käytännön projekteja eri yhteistyökumppaneiden sekä ryhmien kanssa.
